Are Home Extensions The Right Solution For You?

Building company
If your family has grown or if you’re just feeling restless or dissatisfied in your current home, before you start looking at houses on the market, you should consider having a home extension. Expanding the house you already own and live in can be extremely convenient, and it is often more affordable than paying moving costs as well as the price difference of a larger house. So, what should you consider when you’re looking into home extensions?
What exactly do you want?
Instead of making a hypothetical decision about whether a home extension is a good option, you should decide what kind of extension you would have built in reality, and then weigh its pros and cons. If you know that you want to build another bedroom for additional space, or a conservatory to improve your home’s value and appearance, you’ll have an easier time of looking at the space available and the project cost to decide if you can get what you want through an extension. If you can't come up with any specific home extensions that would solve whatever issue you have with your home, you may need to look into other houses after all.
What do you have to work with?
Besides considering your budget, timeframe, and available space, you need to make sure that home extensions are even permissible for your property. You need to check beforehand that any extension you’re considering is legal and follows regulations, which means that it’s a smart choice to find a qualified contractor or builder rather than trying to handle the construction yourself. You should also be realistic about constraints like how much you’re willing to spend or how much room you have to work with: will you be truly satisfied with the extension, or will you want more space or a different look in a couple more years?
What will the actual cost be?
This is another area where an experienced builder will be useful; you’ll want a good quote of costs for labor and materials, as well as the length of time the project will take. Home renovations and extensions are very affordable and convenient options when compared to moving, but if you don’t go into your home extension with the right expectations, you might feel frustrated or even cheated. Setting clear expectations with your builder is key to you feeling satisfied with your home extension.
If you have a specific type of Building contractor in mind, and the project seems feasible in terms of space and cost, there’s no reason not to find a good builder and get started on it right away. Home extensions can increase your home’s value and significantly improve your standard of living, while saving you the time, stress, and money involved in looking for a new house and moving.

  1. My family and I decided to add some home extensions last year because we've outgrown our previous space. My 2 sons moved back home after they graduated from college so we definitely needed these additions. It took a month and some change until the project was done but the wait was well worth it in the end. I know that the additions will enhance my property value in the long-run.
